Overdue office rant…
I don’t know what it is, but in regards to work, people have been really grating on my nerves this whole week. Usually I’m the type that will perk a brow, say ‘assholery noted’ in my head and leave it at that..cause honestly, I can’t be bothered or I’ve been pushed into apathy mode where it’s whatever you want me to do to get it past your desk. Mind you it shouldn’t be that way, but that’s how it is.
I had to stop what I was in the middle of Monday because a task manager wanted the answers I’d previously given to him in writing. I said I would. But I didn’t do it in the time frame he wanted so he sends an email to everyone involved in th project. To which I had to stop what I was in the middle of and respond..so that my bosses and mentoring engineer wouldn’t think I wasn’t talking to the guy at all and keeping him in the loop. Suffice to say that the response was filled with all sorts of pointed reminders that this had all been answered not just an hour earlier via a phone call. I don’t mind having to stop to answer an email that needs an answer poste haste. But when I’ve already answered your questions, you can at least have the courtesy to pose your inquiry such that everyone copied on is informed that we talked previously. It’s as simple as a ‘per our phone conversation this morning, it’s my understanding that the status on $items are as such.’ Then all I have to say is. ‘You have teh correct.’ You’re free to CYOA…but use a lil tact and forethought to not make it so blatant.
Apart from that guy, the only other person stirring my grits is my boss. Usually whatever he says, it just reaffirms that he’s not paying attention. I never know when to enlightened him in a tactful civil manner that still upholds the whole employee/boss respect factor [though admittedly he’s pretty much lost all my respect as a boss] and I think a good part of it is that I have better things to do than to deal with him since I believe whatever I’d say..it probably wouldn’t take. The latter is no excuse, but the first..I truly do forego the ‘confrontation’ when my time is spent better elsewhere. However seeing as his manner has repeatedly ticked me off every time I’ve talked with him this week, it’s telling me that just essentially ignoring his jerkery is no longer an option. Ultimately it will affect my performance review come the end of the year.
I’ve had a couple documents marinating on his desk. Each time I’ve talked to him about his review and can we sit down and discuss his comments, it’s always an excuse of ‘I’ve got things lined up at $ time, so how about $time2’ after it’s already been arranged to get together the time I’m standing in his office. I venture near around $time2 and he’s either not there or he pushes it to another time, or at one time this week, he not only blows me off, but his manner and tone imply it’s my own fault for coming at the time I did despite I’ve done everything but camp out in his office. So, to that I just gave him a curt nod that says ‘fine, even though I’ve tried how many times today?’ and went back to my cube with a mental thought of ‘It’s only time sensitive and needed to be out the door a month ago when I first submitted it. You can explain that to your boss when he wants to know why it took so long. I’ll be happy to correct any covering of your ass to make you look good by showing him all the revisions prior to.’ At this point I refused to stay after to try and hammer it out then. On top of that it’s just been his reviews of my documents..talking to me as if I’ve never done one before, though I have or talks to me while making it clear he hasn’t even considered that I might have taken the steps/actions he’s pointing out, like putting together a book that tracks the project [which I have..since I started, and he’d know if he asked do i do something similar instead of assuming that I don’t right off the bat] and in a not so sleek and subtle way saying I’m not going to take your word for it these things are done, I want to see the supporting documentation to prove it. Seeing the docs..fine. It’s the delivery of his request. The other that irks me, the half assed reviews where he stops at a point, kicks it back, then marks up something else entirely on the next round. How about you review the whole thing so I can make all the changes at once? My only hold up is marrying the civil tongue, with tact while making it clear his manner of address is a problem.
There’s more instances..because like all things that build a rant, it’s not just one thing it’s a cumulation.
