I don't know why I looked for my final grades that semester- I had a good idea of how they'd shake out. I suppose I wanted to know how much my GPA was going to tank, manufacture some semblance of normal. In the stead of a grade was an incomplete and with it, no updated GPA. I wasn't prepared for the professor telling me the incomplete would remain until I took the written part of the final. I hadn't taken any of my finals and this class was the only one without a final grade for the … [Read more...]
What Shame Is There, If It’s You: A GISHWHES Story
I'll start with something that's an important reference - No Man is An Island. I say this because there's a chance there are new readers here. A quick summary of that series is that I stepped forward and talked about that last six years wrestling with Clinical Depression, getting out of its grip and essentially fighting everyday to never be back there again. It's work. It's frustrating and fatiguing- the constant inventory taking, the timeouts to talk myself down if I start to panic...but … [Read more...]

If You Build It, They will Demolish It
I ordered take out that week because I had no food in the fridge save for ingredients. Laughably, I needed the space for the cake. So note to me if I ever do this more than just a hobby/favor every once in a while- I'm going to need a dedicated fridge. With the crumb coat on and hardened, I frost the finished cake. I had icing sheets with designs on them that I was using and they needed to be applied after a fresh coat of frosting. Per the design, I wanted the base decked out in mod … [Read more...]
These Are the Details You’re Looking For
Let it be known that while a nice rich red contrasted against black looks good on paper, it's a wee bit tricky to get something other than raspberry without using a boatload of food coloring. I encountered a number of interesting learning experiences when it came to coloring decorations. I did discover that when dealing with coloring items that are white, priming them works wonders. The pink dusting powder turned out to be useful after all. Fortunately there are a number of options to achieve … [Read more...]
My Kingdom for a Cake
Let Them Eat Cake I have a go-to reference for cake recipes in addition to my Auntie Pam, who showed me how to make the Coconut Cake that has become a requested item. Said Cakenomicron has yet to steer me wrong in the scrumptious spectrum, so my faith in it doth not waver. I chose a simple no frills chocolate cake because I'd have a few things going on palette wise. It was going to be buddied up with strawberry and cream cheese, with a hint of flavored MMF. The recipe wasn't the typical … [Read more...]
When A Plan Comes Together
And so it goes. Some weeks ago, I made a cake for a Baby Shower that was being thrown for a co-worker. I had offered to do so and the organizers took me up on it. It was a lemon cake, so I threw in some dainty fairy cakes in case lemon desserts were not someone's cuppa. They went over big which is part and parcel as to why they're my favorite thing to make- they're just enough of a finish for most things. The part that's always interesting to me though is the reaction. It's always a little … [Read more...]
A Graduation Cake Odyssey
I gave myself a week to put this together because I was heading into new territory. In fact, I usually tend to tread into new territory when making tasty deliciousness unless I'm making an old favorite. Baking is still new territory and it continues to instill some terror and trepidation because I know it's not forgiving. It demands precision and if you screw up, there's usually very little you can do to redress it. For a functioning perfectionist, the idea of failing creates enough of a … [Read more...]
Guttered
I'm whittling away at Casa Primer's To Do List slowly but surely. Three years later, the front of my house has gutters. I don't know why they weren't there in the first place. They put them on the back of the house, but it's beyond me why they didn't put any in the front. Since I have a concrete slab foundation, it's ideal to keep water away from the house as much as possible (concrete's porous, it will absorb it.). The guy recommended to me did an awesome job. His guys were done quickly … [Read more...]
